Pushkar Fair, also known as Pushkar Camel Fair or locally known as Kartik Mela or Pushkar Ka Mela, is a multi-day wildlife and cultural festival held every year at Pushkar (Rajasthan, India). The Mela starts in accordance with the Hindu calendar, Kartik month, and ends with Kartik Purnim, which usually overlaps the Gregorian calendar in late October and early November.
The basic intention behind this fair is to attract the trading of camels since, in deserts, the camels are a great source of commutation as well as income. The local camel traders gather at a place and are able to get good business every time.
This year it is going to be held from 4th to the 12th of November. Thousands of camels brought by their owners get together in the small desert city of Pushkar, India, Rajasthan to host this annual Pushkar Mela. This is an interesting and special sight and a popular opportunity to witness an old traditional Indian-style festival.
Rituals of the festival
Pilgrims come to this festival to bathe in the holy waters of Lake Pushkar and be freed from their sins. Two days around the full moon are considered the best time of year to swim in the lake. Those who bathe in the full moon must receive special blessings.
Most activities take place at the city’s western fair near the intersection of Brahma Temple and National Highway 89. Camels are dressed, groomed, shaved, made to participate in beauty contests, compete, dance and exchange. Great carnival takes place with many musicians, witches, dancers, acrobats, magic snakes, and carousel streets to entertain the audience.
Rajasthan Tourism announced a pre-festival program which will be available free of charge at your accommodation in Pushkar.
Other unique camel practices that promote each animal’s masculinity, such as camel shaving, camel racing, beauty contests, camel parades, camel dancing, and captivating auctions of these extraordinary animals, were featured at the event, which is an integral part of Rajasthan’s livelihood in the desert.
If you planning a visit to Jaipur, around the same time, the camel fair is indeed a once in a lifetime affair. Do visit.
